Credit to 3rd Shift With ABREW for doing the legwork that a lot of city councils won't: actually counting the cameras. Dozens of Flock units popping up on and around a college campus in a matter of weeks isn't "a few cameras for public safety" — that's infrastructure. And infrastructure like this almost never gets rolled back once it's installed.

The question the video raises — are these cameras stopping crime or is something else going on — is the right one, and it's the one Flock Safety and local police departments rarely answer with real data. What we usually get instead are vague claims about "solving cases" with no public accounting of how many plates get scanned, how long the data sits in a database, who else gets access to it, or whether ICE, out-of-state agencies, or private actors can query it. Athens residents deserve those answers before the network gets even bigger, not after.
