Watch: Montana woman fends off moose to protect her dogs

KTVB · 1 month ago

The short version: A Montana woman's Ring camera caught a moose charging her dogs — a reminder that not all cameras are built the same, or aimed at the same people.

Our Take

This one's outside our usual beat — no squad cars, no license plates, just a mama moose and a very brave woman with bear spray. Credit to KTVB for the footage, and glad the dogs are okay.

But it's worth pausing on the hardware doing the recording. A Ring doorbell is a camera the homeowner bought, controls, and can delete footage from whenever she wants. It watched her porch because she put it there, for her reasons. That's a world apart from a Flock Safety ALPR bolted to a utility pole, scanning every car that passes — including hers — and feeding the data into a law enforcement network she never agreed to and can't opt out of.

Home cameras catching wildlife and five-finger discounts are one thing. Government-adjacent networks logging where you drive, 24/7, without a warrant, are another. If you want to see how many of the latter are watching your own street, check our map.
