FLOCK CAMERAS HELP FIND ABDUCTED GIRL

US Newsroom · 4 weeks ago

The short version: US Newsroom's clip about Flock cameras helping locate an abducted teen is the industry's favorite kind of headline — but one rescue doesn't erase the privacy tradeoffs of a nationwide ALPR dragnet.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: US Newsroom's report on a 13-year-old reportedly taken from a Circle K is the exact scenario Flock Safety uses to sell every new contract, and if the cameras genuinely helped bring a kid home safe, that's a good outcome. Nobody at DeFlock USA is going to pretend otherwise.

But one feel-good clip isn't a policy. These networks don't turn off after the Amber Alert ends — they keep logging every plate, every direction of travel, every day, for anyone driving past, whether they're a suspect or just someone running errands. The same database that can locate an abductor can also build a permanent travel history on an ex, a protester, a journalist's source, or you. Rare success stories get press releases; the routine, daily surveillance of millions of innocent drivers rarely does.

Before your town signs the next Flock contract on the strength of a viral rescue story, ask who audits access to that data, how long it's retained, and who else gets to query it. Check our map to see if these cameras are already watching your neighborhood, and visit take action for tools to push your city council for real transparency.
