Hurricane Floyd Anniversary, Emerald Isle Cameras, National Guacamole Day

WCTI News 12 · 3 weeks ago

The short version: A quirky local news roundup buries a real story: Emerald Isle, NC debating license-plate readers between hurricane history and guacamole trivia.

Our Take

WCTI News 12 packs a Hurricane Floyd retrospective, National Guacamole Day, and a genuinely important local story into one segment — and it's easy to see how Emerald Isle's license-plate reader debate could get lost in the mix. But that's exactly the problem with how ALPR expansion spreads across small-town America: it slides in as a footnote next to beach-town trivia instead of getting the scrutiny a permanent surveillance network deserves.

Credit to the WCTI team for at least putting Emerald Isle's camera debate on the map alongside the holiday fluff, because most coastal towns adopting Flock Safety systems don't get even that much local coverage. These decisions are usually made at a town council meeting with a handful of residents present, then quietly installed without a public vote on how long footage is kept, who can access it, or whether neighboring agencies get to query the database too.

If you're in Emerald Isle or anywhere else along the Carolina coast, don't wait for the next segment to explain what already got installed near you. Check our camera map to see what's nearby, and head to our take-action page if you want to push back before another small town becomes another node in the national surveillance grid.
