Flock Cameras Getting It Wrong

Mobile Geezer · 3 months ago

The short version: Mobile Geezer's clip spotlights real cases of Flock ALPR misreads leading to wrongful stops and jail time, proof these systems fail real people.

Our Take

Credit to Mobile Geezer for pulling this clip together and putting a human face on what we've been saying for a while: these cameras are not infallible, and when they're wrong, the consequences land on ordinary drivers who did nothing more than own a car that superficially resembled one on a hot list. A misread plate isn't an abstract glitch — it's handcuffs, a night in a cell, a record that follows you, and a police department that often shrugs it off as "the system worked as intended."

What makes this worse is the accountability gap. Flock markets itself to cities as a force multiplier, but when the tech gets it wrong, the company isn't the one answering for a wrongful detention — a local officer and a traumatized resident are. There's little public auditing of error rates, false-positive thresholds, or how often these misreads actually happen nationwide, because most departments aren't required to track or release that data. We're just supposed to trust that the system is tuned well enough not to ruin someone's week.

This is exactly why mapping where these cameras live and pushing for transparency and accountability measures matters. If your town is quietly wiring itself up with ALPR infrastructure, you deserve to know it's there before it decides you're a suspect. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your routes, and hit up our take-action page if you want to push back at the local level.
