Great place to visit, if you don’t mind getting flocked

The Minutemen Report · 3 months ago

The short version: The Minutemen Report spotlights a North Carolina tourist spot blanketed in Flock cameras, a reminder that surveillance doesn't take a vacation.

Our Take

Credit to The Minutemen Report for pointing the camera (so to speak) at something a lot of visitors never notice: the Flock Safety ALPR rigs quietly logging every car that rolls into a popular destination. It's a small, almost throwaway observation — "great place to visit, if you don't mind getting flocked" — but it captures exactly how normalized this infrastructure has become. You go somewhere to unwind, and your plate, your travel pattern, your presence gets time-stamped into a database you never agreed to be part of.

This is the part of the ALPR story that doesn't get enough attention: these systems aren't just parked outside high-crime intersections, they're showing up in tourist towns, main streets, and neighborhoods where the biggest "threat" is a parking dispute. Once a camera network exists, it doesn't discriminate between a wanted vehicle and a family on vacation — it just records, uploads, and retains. The video is a short clip, but it's a useful nudge to actually look up when you're heading out of town next.

If you want to see whether your own route in or out of town is already wired up, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not just observe the problem, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the local level.
