ARIZONA PROTESTS UNDER AI-DRIVEN MASS SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS

Jen's Two Cents. | Jen & Friends Podcast · 1 year ago

The short version: Jen's Two Cents shows Goodyear, AZ protesters unknowingly boxed in by 44 Flock cameras guarding every exit from Estrella Mountain Ranch, proving dragnet ALPRs chill dissent regardless of intent.

Our Take

Credit to Jen's Two Cents (Jen & Friends Podcast) for doing what local officials rarely bother to: standing in the street and asking people if they know they're being logged. The answer, predictably, was no. That ignorance isn't an accident — it's the business model. Flock Safety cameras are marketed as background infrastructure, quietly bolted to poles at every entrance and exit of a neighborhood, so ordinary life, including the act of protesting on Labor Day, gets swept into a searchable database without anyone's consent or awareness.

City officials love the line "we only capture license plates, not faces." That's a distinction without much comfort. A plate read at every chokepoint in and out of a gated community is a movement log. Combine entrance and exit timestamps with 44 cameras across a single city and you don't need facial recognition to build a pattern of life — who showed up to the protest, what time they left, whether they came back the next week. That's the entire point of a networked ALPR system: not catching one car, but tracking everyone, retroactively, forever.

The "what difference does it make" shrug some protesters gave is exactly the attitude this technology depends on to expand unchecked. It makes a difference the day a subpoena, a data-sharing agreement, or a vengeful official decides your lawful protest attendance is worth cross-referencing. Check our camera map to see what's watching your own neighborhood, and head to take-action if you'd rather your city council hear about this before the next protest than after.
