McLean, VA Neighborhood Employs Flock Camera to Deter Property Crime

Flock · 5 years ago

The short version: A Flock-produced segment touts a McLean, VA neighborhood's camera as a crime deterrent, but skips the oversight questions that actually matter.

Our Take

Notice the byline here: this isn't independent reporting, it's a clip from Flock Safety's own channel that happened to air on a local Fox affiliate. That matters. When the company selling the cameras also supplies the story about how great the cameras are working, you're getting marketing dressed up as news — no mention of retention periods, who can query the data, or whether similar systems have actually driven down crime anywhere with rigorous, independent analysis.

HOA-driven ALPR adoption is one of the quietest ways this surveillance infrastructure spreads. One subdivision in McLean installs a reader to catch porch pirates, and suddenly every vehicle entering or leaving that neighborhood is logged, timestamped, and potentially shared across Flock's growing network of police and private customers. Nobody voted on that at a city council meeting. A homeowners' association decided it, and the data doesn't stay fenced off from law enforcement requests just because a private street bought the hardware.

Deterrence claims are easy to make on camera and hard to verify afterward. Before your own street gets wired up, check our camera map to see what's already watching nearby, and visit take-action for ways to push back before mass license-plate tracking becomes the default for American neighborhoods.
