Flock cameras help catch murder suspect
The short version: WJLA reports Flock cameras helped Alexandria police track a murder suspect, but the segment skips the bigger questions about who else's movements got swept up along the way.
Our Take
Credit to ABC 7's WJLA newsroom for covering a local case where Flock Safety cameras reportedly played a role in tracking down a murder suspect in Alexandria. These stories make for good television: a violent crime, a quick resolution, a grateful police department. What they almost never include is any accounting of how many innocent drivers' plates, locations, and travel patterns were scanned and logged in the process of solving that one case.
That's the trade-off we keep flagging at DeFlock The USA. A single successful match doesn't tell you anything about the thousands of other plates swept into the same database that night, who has access to that data, how long it's retained, or whether it ever gets shared with agencies outside Alexandria. Local news rarely asks those questions because the 'camera catches bad guy' story is simple and the surveillance infrastructure story is not. Both are true at the same time.
If you want to know whether a network like this is already watching your own neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for the next news segment to find out, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your area.
