Flock, Give Us a Yearbook #substack #shorts

Joey Greer · 5 months ago

The short version: Joey Greer's short riffs on Flock Safety's secrecy with a biting joke: if these cameras are everywhere, why not just give the public a 'yearbook' of them already?

Our Take

Joey Greer's bit lands because it's funny and true at the same time. The joke about wanting a 'yearbook' of Flock cameras cuts right to the absurdity of the current setup: these ALPR networks are scanning every plate that rolls past, building location histories on millions of ordinary drivers, and yet the public is expected to just trust that it's all fine without ever seeing a real accounting of where the cameras are or who's looking at the data.

That's the core problem DeFlock exists to fix. Flock Safety and the police departments that buy its hardware rarely volunteer a full map of camera locations, retention policies, or audit logs in plain language. Comedy clips like this one do real work by making the absurdity legible to people who'd otherwise scroll past a policy report. Credit to Greer for turning a surveillance critique into something shareable.

If you want an actual yearbook instead of a punchline, we're building one crowdsourced camera at a time — check our map to see what's been documented near you, and hit take action if you want to help push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your town.
