Your Car's Location is Tracked: Are YOU the Product? #shorts

DailyDoseOfClips · 2 weeks ago

The short version: A short clip from DailyDoseOfClips asks a blunt question about ALPR networks: if it's free, who's really the product?

Our Take

DailyDoseOfClips packs a real point into a short-form video: license plate readers don't just scan a plate, they build a timeline of your life — where you work, who you visit, what church or clinic you drive to. That data doesn't vanish after the "public safety" use case is met. It gets stored, shared, and in Flock Safety's case, networked across thousands of agencies and private subscribers nationwide.

The "free" framing is worth sitting with. Flock pitches cameras to HOAs, businesses, and police departments as a low-cost force multiplier, but somebody is always paying — and when the payment isn't cash, it's data. Once a camera is up, there's rarely a sunset clause, rarely a public vote, and rarely a plain-language answer about who else can query your travel history.

Clips like this are useful because they reach people who've never heard the term ALPR before. If this is new to you, check our map to see what's already deployed near you, and visit take action for ways to push back at the local level.
