USA AI being restricted within parts of the EU

Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency · 4 months ago

The short version: A watchdog channel flags EU pushback on American AI systems, a reminder that the surveillance tech fueling Flock's ALPR network doesn't stay contained within U.S. borders.

Our Take

Credit to the Digital ID, Mass Surveillance and Digital Currency channel for tracking how European regulators are drawing harder lines around American AI deployments. It's a useful signal: while U.S. communities are still debating whether Flock Safety cameras belong on their streets, other jurisdictions are already treating American-made surveillance and AI systems as risks worth restricting. That gap says a lot about how far behind U.S. policy and public awareness remain.

We don't have the specifics of what's being restricted or why in this case, and we're not going to speculate beyond what's shown. But the broader pattern is familiar to anyone who's followed the ALPR debate here at home: data-hungry AI tools get rolled out at scale before the public, or even lawmakers, fully understand what's being collected, who can access it, and how long it sticks around. Flock's own network is a prime example — thousands of plate-reading cameras feeding a searchable database that law enforcement agencies, and sometimes outside parties, can query with little independent oversight.

If other countries are willing to push back on unchecked AI and surveillance infrastructure, it's a fair question why so many American towns aren't asking the same hard questions before signing a Flock contract.
