Can Flock Cameras Read Our Lips, Right Now?

The Modern Rogue · 2 weeks ago

The short version: The Modern Rogue stress-tests whether Flock cameras could theoretically read lips, a fun thought experiment that still misses the surveillance that's already real and documented.

Our Take

Credit to The Modern Rogue for asking the question out loud instead of just assuming the worst: can a license plate reader camera actually make out what you're saying from across a parking lot? It's a fun, slightly absurd premise, and testing claims instead of repeating them is exactly the kind of skepticism this topic needs. Most Flock panic online is built on vibes, not verification, so we're glad to see someone actually pointing a camera at a mouth and checking.

But here's the thing: whether or not these cameras can read lips right now is almost beside the point. Flock's documented capability is already enough to make most people uncomfortable — networked ALPRs logging your plate, your direction of travel, your vehicle's make and color, timestamped and searchable, often shared across thousands of agencies with few guardrails on who looks at it or why. You don't need a lip-reading sci-fi upgrade for this to be a mass surveillance system; it already is one, quietly, at the end of your street.

The real question isn't "what could Flock theoretically do next," it's "do you know what it's doing in your town right now." Check our map to see if there's a camera near you, and if you don't like what you find, head to take action for concrete steps to push back at the local level, where these decisions actually get made.
