Saskatchewan’s new speed cameras are not Flock cameras: SGI

CTV News · 1 month ago

The short version: SGI insists its Saskatchewan speed cameras aren't Flock tech, but the distinction matters less than the surveillance trend itself.

Our Take

CTV News reports that Saskatchewan's SGI is going out of its way to clarify that its new automated speed cameras have nothing to do with Flock Safety's ALPR network. That's a telling detail in itself: Flock's brand has become so synonymous with controversy that a Canadian provincial insurer felt the need to publicly distance itself from the name. Credit to CTV for flagging that even officials north of the border are watching how Flock's reputation plays out here.

But the "it's not Flock" defense is a bit of a dodge. Whether a camera is built by Flock, Genetec, Redflex, or a government contractor, the core question is the same: who's collecting data on ordinary drivers, how long is it kept, and who gets access to it. Speed cameras and plate readers serve different technical purposes, but both feed into the same broader shift toward automated, always-on monitoring of public roads. Branding aside, the surveillance creep is the pattern worth watching.

If you want to see how far that creep has already spread in the U.S., check out our camera map tracking Flock deployments nationwide, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back on ALPR expansion in your own community.
