Stingray escapes touch tank in Florida | Florida For Reel

FOX 13 Tampa Bay · 1 month ago

The short version: A viral stingray jailbreak at a Sarasota aquarium has nothing to do with ALPR surveillance, so we're sitting this one out.

Our Take

Credit to FOX 13 Tampa Bay's Emari Craft and Scott Tavlin for a fun local news segment — a stingray making a break for it from a touch tank is the kind of harmless viral moment the internet runs on. It's a good story, well told, and clearly resonated with viewers.

But DeFlock The USA exists to track automated license plate readers and the quiet expansion of mass surveillance infrastructure across the country, not aquarium escapes or texting etiquette. We'd rather not stretch for a connection that isn't there just to have something to say.

If you came here expecting commentary on Flock Safety cameras, check out our camera map to see what's actually being deployed near you, and visit our take-action page if you want to push back on it. We'll be back with real ALPR coverage soon.
