ESP32: Your Privacy Shield Against ALPR #shorts
The short version: STS Technologies LLC pitches an ESP32-based 'FlockYou' gadget as an ALPR privacy shield, but gadgets aren't a substitute for mapping cameras and fighting the policies behind them.
Our Take
STS Technologies LLC's short is part of a growing wave of DIY gadgets promising to make your car invisible to license plate readers. The pitch is seductive: slap on an ESP32-powered device and reclaim your privacy. We're not going to pretend we've bench-tested this thing, and neither should you take the marketing at face value — plenty of plate-obfuscation gadgets oversell what a cheap microcontroller can actually do against a hardened camera network, and some tactics sit in a legal gray zone depending on your state's plate-visibility laws.
The bigger issue is that gadgets treat ALPR sprawl as a personal inconvenience to engineer around, rather than a systemic surveillance problem to confront. Flock Safety and its competitors have blanketed intersections, neighborhoods, and highways with always-on readers that log every passing vehicle, regardless of whether you've got a jammer strapped to your bumper. One car at a time isn't how you roll back a dragnet.
If you want to actually understand what you're up against, start by checking our camera map to see what's watching your routes, then head to take-action for ways to push back at the policy level — public records requests, city council pressure, and vendor contract scrutiny do more long-term damage to mass surveillance than any single piece of hardware.
