Whisker Just Got Caught: Their $899 AI Litter Box Can't Tell Cats Apart #technews #ai #technology

The short version: A $899 smart litter box that can't tell two cats apart is a small, funny reminder that 'AI-powered' surveillance claims deserve receipts, not trust.

Our Take

Credit to The Blueprint for actually testing Whisker's marketing claims instead of repeating them. Six months of real-world use showing a premium 'AI facial recognition' litter box confusing two cats that don't even look alike is a good punchline — but it's also a useful data point about how often companies slap 'AI-powered' on a product and expect nobody to check the work.

We cover Flock Safety and ALPR networks, not litter boxes, but the pattern is identical. Vendors sell law enforcement and HOAs on near-magical accuracy — reading plates, flagging 'suspicious' vehicles, building behavioral profiles — and most of that gets taken on faith because the systems are proprietary and the testing is internal. When a $899 consumer gadget can't reliably distinguish two housecats, it's worth asking what margin of error we're accepting from systems that log every car on every public road and feed that data to police departments with far less oversight than a Chewy review section.

The stakes are obviously different — a misidentified cat gets annoyed, a misidentified driver can get pulled over, searched, or worse. If you want to see how much of this infrastructure already exists near you, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on it locally, our take-action page has a place to start.
