Gwinnett residents push to end Flock camera contracts amid surveillance concerns

CBS Atlanta · 2 months ago

The short version: Gwinnett County residents are organizing to block renewal of Flock ALPR contracts, showing local pushback can force a public reckoning before budgets quietly lock in surveillance.

Our Take

Credit to CBS Atlanta for getting Gwinnett residents on camera saying what a lot of communities feel but rarely say out loud at a council meeting: we didn't sign up for a county-wide network that logs every car that passes a reader. Contract renewal season is exactly when these systems get rubber-stamped with zero public debate, so the fact that people showed up to push back before the vote matters more than it might look on the surface.

This is the pattern we track constantly — a county quietly adopts Flock cameras for 'stolen vehicles' or 'Amber Alerts,' and years later nobody can say who's actually auditing the data, how long it's kept, or which agencies outside the county have pulled searches against it. Renewal time is the one moment residents have real leverage, because elected officials actually have to answer for the line item in public, instead of a police chief approving it administratively.

If you're in Gwinnett or anywhere else watching your county consider the same move, check our map to see what's already deployed near you, and use our take-action page for talking points before the next vote.
