Less Paperwork, More Protection | Getac Video Solutions

Getac Rugged Solutions · 4 months ago

The short version: Getac's slick pitch for rugged laptops and body cameras sells 'efficiency,' but every minute of paperwork removed is replaced by more automated data flowing into police networks with little public oversight.

Our Take

Getac Rugged Solutions' promo video frames its hardware as a win-win: officers spend less time filling out reports, departments get more 'protection.' What it doesn't dwell on is that the time saved on paperwork is time redirected into automated data capture — body cams, in-car systems, and the backend software that ties it all together, often feeding into the same license-plate-reader networks and surveillance databases we track every day.

'Less paperwork' is corporate-speak for 'less friction.' Friction used to be a built-in check — an officer had to manually log a stop, manually justify a search. Rugged tech vendors are selling the removal of that friction as pure efficiency, but efficiency without transparency just means surveillance infrastructure expands faster than the public's ability to ask questions about it. These products aren't neutral tools; they're part of the same ecosystem as Flock Safety cameras, and they integrate into the data-sharing pipelines that make mass tracking possible.

We're not saying officers shouldn't have decent equipment. We're saying every vendor pitch like this one deserves scrutiny about where the data goes, who can access it, and how long it's kept. Check our camera map to see what's already deployed near you, and visit take action if you want to push back on unchecked expansion.
