We need to stop focusing on flock cameras (Part 1)

𝒁𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒕 ☀ · 2 weeks ago

The short version: A creator argues the anti-surveillance movement is too fixated on Flock Safety cameras alone β€” a fair warning, but Flock's scale makes it a necessary flashpoint.

Our Take

Credit to Zealot ☀ for pushing back on groupthink: it's healthy to ask whether a movement is picking the right target. Mass surveillance is bigger than any one vendor β€” license plate readers, facial recognition, data brokers, and local PD contracts with federal agencies all feed the same machine. If the video's point is that Flock cameras are one node in a much larger network, that's worth sitting with.

But there's a reason Flock gets so much attention: it's the fastest-growing, most visible piece of that network, with thousands of cameras now logging every passing car in towns that never had a public debate about it. Naming the biggest, most expandable piece of infrastructure isn't tunnel vision β€” it's strategy. You fight the thing that's metastasizing in real time, in your own city council's budget, right now.

We'd rather people know exactly where the nearest camera sits and how to push back locally than get lost in the abstraction of "surveillance in general." Check our map to see what's already watching your route, and hit take-action if you want to do something about it instead of just arguing about where to look.
