Huntsville Police Department breaks down its use of Flock cameras
The short version: A local news segment lets Huntsville PD frame Flock ALPRs as 'not that invasive,' a claim that deserves more scrutiny than airtime.
Our Take
FOX54 News Huntsville gave Huntsville PD a friendly platform to walk through its Flock Safety camera program, and the headline quote says it all: officers insist license plate readers are 'a lot less invasive than people think.' That's a talking point, not a fact-check. Every time a camera logs your plate, time, and location, it's building a travel history on you whether or not you're suspected of anything — that's the entire business model Flock is selling to departments like this one.
What's missing from these department-narrated segments is almost always the same: how long is the data kept, who else can query it, is it shared across state lines or with federal agencies, and what oversight exists if an officer runs a plate for personal reasons? 'Trust us, it's not invasive' isn't an answer to any of that. Local news outlets covering these rollouts should be asking PDs to show their retention policies and audit logs, not just let them narrate their own PR.
If Huntsville has Flock cameras near you, it's worth knowing exactly where. Check our camera map to see what's logging your plate, and if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR expansion in your city, our take-action page has steps to start.
