America is Under Mass AI Surveillance #ai

CaffCody · 3 months ago

The short version: A road-tripper's casual camera-spotting confirms what we track daily: ALPR infrastructure is everywhere, and most Americans drive past it without a second glance.

Our Take

Credit to CaffCody for doing what more people should: actually looking up. It's one thing for us to tell you Flock Safety and other ALPR systems have metastasized across the country, it's another for a regular traveler to notice the same thing unprompted on a road trip and feel compelled to make a video about it. That gut reaction — "wait, why are there so many of these?" — is exactly the response this industry is counting on you never having.

These camera networks aren't sitting there as inert hardware. Every plate read gets logged, timestamped, and often shared across jurisdictions and with federal agencies, building a travel history on anyone who drives, regardless of suspicion. A road trip through "insane amounts" of cameras isn't a quirky observation, it's a snapshot of a surveillance dragnet that was built with almost no public debate in most of the towns that installed it.

If this video got your attention, don't stop at noticing — check our camera map to see what's logged near your own routes, and head to take-action for concrete steps to push back at the local level, where these decisions actually get made.
