Dallas police leaders to meet with Flock
The short version: Dallas PD's closed-door sit-down with Flock Safety is a chance to rubber-stamp more ALPR cameras without real public input.
Our Take
CBS Texas (credit to their newsroom for flagging this) reports that Dallas police brass are sitting down with Flock Safety this week to hash out the future of the company's license plate readers in the city. Notice who's in the room: police leadership and a surveillance vendor. Notice who isn't: the residents whose daily movements get logged every time they drive past one of these cameras.
This is the pattern we see over and over — a "hotly debated technology" gets debated behind closed doors, between the people selling the system and the people who want to buy it, while the public finds out after contracts are already signed. Flock doesn't need to win over city council or voters if it can just win over the chief. That's not oversight, that's a sales meeting with a badge in the room.
If you're in Dallas, this is the moment to start paying attention, not after the cameras go up. Check our map to see what's already been deployed near you, and hit up take action for ways to push your city council toward actual transparency before Flock and PD shake hands on more hardware.
