Flock cameras aid Beaumont police, but privacy concerns grow over data access

KFDM YouTube · 2 months ago

The short version: KFDM's Beaumont report shows the same pattern we see everywhere: police tout case closures while glossing over who else can access the data and for how long.

Our Take

Credit to KFDM for putting a local face on a national story. Beaumont PD is doing what departments across the country do: pointing to a handful of solved cases as proof that a network of always-on license plate cameras is worth the tradeoff. What rarely gets equal airtime is the back end — who else can query that data, how long it's retained, and whether any outside agency, federal or otherwise, gets a pipeline into Beaumont's reads.

That's the real story hiding behind "it helped solve a crime." Flock's value proposition to cities is investigative convenience, but the system logs everyone's movements, not just suspects', and audit logs showing bulk searches or out-of-state lookups have popped up in city after city once residents start asking questions. Beaumont deserves the same scrutiny: public records requests, audit trail reviews, and a city council willing to ask hard questions before renewing the contract.

If you want to see how far this network already reaches in Texas and beyond, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for a local news crew to find the next data-sharing surprise in your town, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing your council toward transparency now.
