How Las Vegas Solves Crime

Flock · 4 months ago

The short version: Flock's own promo video touts Las Vegas as a surveillance success story, but a company marketing its own product isn't proof mass ALPR monitoring actually reduces crime.

Our Take

Let's be clear about what this video is: an ad. Flock Safety produced it, Flock Safety stars in it, and Flock Safety gets to pick which clips from the All In Podcast segment make the cut. When the company selling the cameras also narrates the story of how effective those cameras are, you're not watching journalism — you're watching a sales pitch dressed up as civic triumph.

"Crime is an option and they've said no" sounds good in a highlight reel, but it skips the actual tradeoffs: a city-wide, real-time network of plate readers means every driver passing through Las Vegas — tourist, commuter, delivery driver, domestic violence survivor fleeing an abuser, protester heading to a rally — gets logged, timestamped, and fed into a database whether or not they're suspected of anything. "Fewer places to go undetected" cuts both ways. That's not a side effect of the system; it's the system.

We'd take claims like these more seriously if they came with independent audits, public retention policies, and hard data instead of a podcast clip and a corporate camera crew.
