Protect Your Mobile Privacy with RayHunter #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies spotlights EFF's open-source RayHunter tool for sniffing out Stingrays, a reminder that license plate readers are just one piece of the surveillance dragnet.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: STS Technologies LLC is putting a spotlight on RayHunter, the EFF's open-source tool that watches your cellular baseband for the tell-tale signs of an IMSI catcher or Stingray pretending to be a legitimate cell tower. That these devices still roam free in American cities, scooping up phone identifiers without a warrant, is the same rot we track with ALPRs — opaque tech deployed first, oversight demanded later, if ever.

We'd rather see people flash their own Orbic devices with the free RayHunter firmware than pay a markup for a 'professionally installed' version, but the core message lands: cheap, DIY detection tools are shifting some power back to ordinary people who never consented to being tracked, whether by a fake cell tower or a camera bolted to a stop sign.

If Stingrays bother you, license plate readers should too — they're running in your neighborhood right now, often without a council vote or a public hearing. Check our camera map to see what's nearby, and hit take action for ways to push back on both kinds of surveillance.
