Are FLOCK Cameras GOOD or BAD?

Matthew Cox | Inside True Crime · 2 months ago

The short version: A true-crime YouTuber's 'good or bad' take on Flock cameras shows the debate over ALPR surveillance is finally hitting mainstream true-crime audiences.

Our Take

Matthew Cox built his channel on true crime, so it's telling that even that audience is now asking whether Flock Safety's license plate readers are a net good or a quiet expansion of the surveillance state. The framing of the question — "good or bad?" — is itself revealing: most Americans have no idea these cameras exist on their daily commute, let alone that the footage is often shared across agencies and states with little oversight.

We don't need Cox to settle the debate for us. The facts speak plainly: these systems track ordinary people who've committed no crime, retain data far longer than necessary, and operate with almost no public transparency about who can access the footage or why. A true-crime creator asking hard questions is a good sign that the conversation is breaking out of activist circles and into the mainstream, where policy actually gets made.
