Manvel votes to defund Flock cameras

FOX 26 Houston · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Manvel, Texas city leaders unanimously voted to pull funding for Flock Safety ALPR cameras, a rare reversal worth celebrating.

Our Take

Credit to FOX 26 Houston and reporter Jillian Hartmann for covering a story that doesn't get enough airtime: a city council actually clawing back a surveillance contract instead of rubber-stamping another renewal. Manvel's unanimous vote to defund its Flock cameras is a reminder that these systems aren't inevitable. They get installed because nobody in the room pushes back, and they get removed when residents and officials finally ask the basic questions — who sees this data, how long is it kept, and what has it actually accomplished for public safety.

Flock and similar vendors love to frame ALPR networks as a quiet, consensus-driven upgrade to policing. But "unanimous" cuts both ways. The same council dynamics that rubber-stamp a Flock contract in one town can just as easily kill one in the next, especially once elected officials realize they're on the hook for a recurring subscription fee tied to a camera network with murky oversight and a growing track record of data misuse, mission creep, and access by outside agencies, including federal ones, with no local control.

Every defunding vote is leverage for the next town having this debate. If your city has Flock cameras, check our map to see what's nearby, and use our take-action guide to push your own council toward the kind of hearing Manvel just had.
