Man Charged With 3 Felonies For Breaking 3D-Printed ‘Decoy’ Flock Camera

404 Media · 1 month ago

The short version: A Florida department 3D-printed fake Flock cameras as bait, then hit a man with three felonies for tearing one down.

Our Take

Credit to 404 Media for surfacing this one: a Florida police department allegedly had an officer 3D-print hollow plastic replicas of Flock cameras, planted them around town, and waited for someone to take the bait. When a man cut one down, he wasn't charged with a misdemeanor for messing with a prop — he's facing three felonies. That's not a proportional response to vandalizing a piece of plastic with no electronics inside it. It's a signal about how aggressively the surveillance apparatus, and the police who deploy it, intend to protect the image of omnipresent monitoring, even when the monitoring itself isn't real.

This stunt only makes sense in a world where the mere appearance of an ALPR network is treated as load-bearing for public safety. Departments want residents and would-be criminals alike to believe cameras are everywhere, so fake ones get normalized right alongside real ones. That blurs the line between legitimate enforcement and theater, and it raises the stakes for anyone who tampers with a pole-mounted box without knowing whether it's hardware or a hollow decoy. Felony charges over a decoy also show how far prosecutors are willing to stretch the law to defend the credibility of a surveillance program, real or fake.
