Flock solved a million crimes with cameras according to CEO Garret Langley

CheekyCheeseVideos · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Flock's CEO touts a million 'solved crimes,' but a number without context or independent audit isn't proof that blanket plate surveillance is safe or necessary.

Our Take

Credit to CheekyCheeseVideos for getting Flock CEO Garret Langley on record touting the company's favorite talking point: over a million crimes supposedly solved by its license plate readers. It's a great sound bite for investors and city councils, but 'solved' is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Flock is marking its own homework — there's no independent audit explaining what counts as a solve, how many of those cases involved serious crime versus minor violations, or how many leads actually led nowhere.

This is the core problem with ALPR expansion: the industry gets to define success on its own terms while everyday drivers have zero say in being tracked block by block, city by city. A big number makes for good PR, but it doesn't tell you how long your plate data is stored, who it's shared with, or whether a camera near your house is even disclosed to the public.
