Flock You! Automated License Plate Readers and the new Surveillance State

Late Stage Boomer · 2 months ago

The short version: Late Stage Boomer's "Flock You!" breaks down how ALPR networks quietly stitched together a nationwide surveillance system most drivers never consented to.

Our Take

Credit to Late Stage Boomer for putting plain language to something that's been hiding in plain sight on street corners and gas station lots across the country. The title says it best: Flock You. What started as a pitch to neighborhood HOAs about catching car thieves has metastasized into a de facto national tracking grid, built by a private company, fed by local police budgets, and largely invisible to the people driving past it every day.

The point worth sitting with is consent, or the total lack of it. Nobody votes on whether their block gets a camera that logs every passing plate, timestamps it, and dumps it into a database other agencies can query. These systems get installed quietly, marketed as crime-fighting tools, and then expand in scope long after the public hearing (if there even was one) has been forgotten. That's the pattern this channel is reacting to, and it's the same pattern we track here.

If this video got you looking twice at that pole-mounted box on your commute, don't stop there. Check our map to see what's already been documented near you, and head to take-action for concrete steps to push back at the local level before the next camera goes up.
