Flock Safety Cameras: ALPR Claims vs. What's Verified

Flock Off · 1 month ago

The short version: Flock Off's video pushes back on Flock Safety's marketing claims, underscoring why independent verification of ALPR performance matters more than vendor press releases.

Our Take

The creator behind Flock Off hits on something we harp on constantly here: there's a wide gap between what Flock Safety says its cameras do and what's actually been independently verified. Crime-reduction stats, 'success story' tallies, and accuracy claims get repeated in city council meetings and local news segments as settled fact, when in reality they're often self-reported by the company selling the hardware. That's not journalism, that's a sales pitch wearing a public-safety costume.

The video's framing that this isn't a left-right issue is exactly right, and it's worth saying louder. Gun owners worried about tracking, immigrants worried about ICE access, protesters worried about retaliation, domestic violence survivors worried about abusers with law enforcement connections — they all end up on the same side once they understand what a network of always-on plate readers actually means. Mass surveillance doesn't check your voter registration before it logs your movements.

If your town is debating a Flock contract, don't let 'the vendor says it works' be the end of the conversation. Check our camera map to see what's already been installed near you, and head to our take-action page for ways to push back before the next camera goes up.
