Barling PD in Arkansas recover a stolen vehicle, thanks to Flock Safety

Flock · 5 years ago

The short version: Flock Safety's own channel touts a stolen-vehicle recovery in Barling, Arkansas, but a single success story from the company that sells the cameras isn't independent evidence of public safety benefit.

Our Take

This clip comes straight from Flock Safety's corporate YouTube channel, not an independent newsroom or a local TV station. That matters: a company showcasing its own product's highlight reel is marketing, not accountability journalism. One recovered stolen car makes for a great sales pitch, but it tells us nothing about the thousands of other plate scans in Barling that had nothing to do with any crime, who accessed that data, how long it was stored, or whether it was shared with other agencies or federal databases.

We're not disputing that police sometimes find stolen vehicles using ALPR hits. We're pointing out that these feel-good clips are exactly how a mass-surveillance network gets normalized one small town at a time, with zero mention of retention policies, audit logs, or the dragnet of innocent drivers' movements being logged along the way. Barling PD, like thousands of other departments, gets a free promotional video; the public gets another node in a nationwide tracking grid with little public debate.

If you want to see whether Flock cameras have already gone up in your neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather your town not become the next case study, our take-action page has concrete steps for pushing back at the city council level.
