Flock WTF?!
The short version: Conscious Spend's "Flock WTF?!" spotlights ALPR cameras allegedly aimed at pools, playgrounds, and bike paths — a reminder that 'public safety' tech keeps creeping past cars and plates.
Our Take
Credit to Conscious Spend for pointing a camera at the cameras. Flock Safety has always sold its network as a tool for catching stolen vehicles and license plates tied to crimes, but if these reported sightings near pools, playgrounds, and bike paths hold up, it's worth asking who exactly these lenses are watching — and why. Kids on scooters and people in swimsuits aren't rolling probable cause.
This is the pattern we keep flagging: ALPR infrastructure gets approved for traffic and crime, then quietly expands into everyday civic space with little public debate about field of view, retention, or who can query the footage. Once a camera is up, the mission has a way of creeping outward from 'stolen cars' to 'everyone, everywhere, all the time.'
If you want to know what's actually watching your neighborhood, check our camera map, and if you'd rather not wait for your town to end up in a video like this, see how to push back at your next city council meeting.
