Gold in Flock Cameras?

SCHEUNEMAN BRAND · 3 days ago

The short version: A YouTuber from SCHEUNEMAN BRAND pokes at whether Flock ALPR units contain scrap-worthy gold or valuable components, more curiosity than exposé.

Our Take

Credit where it's due: SCHEUNEMAN BRAND's "Gold in Flock Cameras?" is less a surveillance investigation and more a curiosity piece asking what's actually inside these boxes bolted to utility poles across the country. It's a fair question — most people have never cracked one open, and Flock doesn't exactly publish teardown specs for the public.

We're not going to speculate on scrap value or encourage anyone to go full treasure-hunter on hardware that, legally speaking, belongs to a private company and is often installed with murky public oversight. What the video does usefully, even if unintentionally, is remind viewers that these are physical objects with real components, real costs, and real vendors profiting off a surveillance network most residents never voted on. That's worth sitting with regardless of what's soldered inside.

If you're more interested in where these cameras actually are than what they're made of, check our camera map to see what's watching your neighborhood, and visit take action for legitimate ways to push back on local ALPR contracts.
