As flock cameras come down, a look back at cases they've helped in Central Florida

WESH 2 News · 1 month ago

The short version: WESH 2 News frames Flock camera removals in Central Florida with a highlight reel of solved cases, skipping the surveillance tradeoffs that got them pulled in the first place.

Our Take

Credit to WESH 2 News for covering a real local story: Flock cameras coming down in Central Florida. But the framing here is familiar — a parade of solved cases presented as the whole story, with little room for why these systems get yanked in the first place. Contracts lapse, budgets tighten, and sometimes communities push back after learning just how much of their daily movement was being logged, stored, and shared without a warrant.

A highlight reel of cases where ALPR data happened to help is not the same as an honest accounting of the system's costs. Thousands of plates scanned per camera per day, data retention policies that vary by agency, and the quiet expansion of networks that can track anyone's comings and goings — none of that fits neatly into a feel-good retrospective. When outlets only look back at the wins, the public never gets the full ledger.

If you want to see whether Flock or similar ALPR systems are active near you, check our map, and if your town is debating whether to renew or cut a contract, our take-action page has tools to help you speak up before the decision's already made.
