Morrow And Ferrer 6 RCSO Deputies Arrested Over Flock Cameras

OhDangReally · 1 month ago

The short version: Two Augusta investigators got arrested and fired the same day for running Flock plate-reader searches with no case attached, per OhDangReally's reporting.

Our Take

Credit to OhDangReally for digging into this one: six Richmond County deputies implicated, with investigators Morrow and Ferrer reportedly running Flock Safety searches that had no case number, no warrant, no legitimate reason behind them. Their own department caught it internally, and the response was swift — arrests and terminations on the same day, with felony violation of oath of office on the charge sheet. That's a rare outcome. Most agencies never audit, never disclose, and never prosecute.

This is exactly the scenario DeFlock has been warning about since these cameras started multiplying on street corners nationwide. Flock's own marketing leans on "audit trails" and "accountability" as the safety net that supposedly prevents misuse. But an audit trail only matters if someone is actually reading it, and in Augusta it apparently took an internal investigation — not a routine check — to catch officers allegedly running plates for reasons that had nothing to do with an actual case. If it happened here, it's worth asking how many other departments have the same blind spot and just haven't looked yet.

Every one of these networked cameras is a potential chokepoint for abuse — stalking, political targeting, personal grudges — dressed up as public safety infrastructure. Go check our camera map to see what's logging plates in your area, and if you want to push back on unchecked ALPR deployment in your city, our take-action page has the tools to start.
