Emerald Isle's story is the same one we've seen in hundreds of small towns: a modest budget line item, a couple of grand-sounding numbers, and suddenly a beach community is looking at automated plate readers and a drone program. The pitch is always public safety. The reality is a permanent record of everyone who drives through town, indexed by plate, time, and location, sitting in a database most residents will never see the terms of.

What's notable here is that Emerald Isle is actually hosting input sessions before pulling the trigger. That's rare, and it's worth showing up for. Most towns buy first and explain later, if at all. Residents who care about whether their movements get logged every time they drive to the grocery store or the beach access point should use these sessions to ask the hard questions: who has access to this data, how long is it kept, is it shared with other agencies or federal databases, and what happens when the system misidentifies a car.
