Monroe protestors demand city to remove all Flock cameras, automated license plate readers | WSOC-TV

WSOCTV9 · 4 weeks ago

The short version: Monroe, NC residents are publicly pushing back on Flock ALPRs, telling the city council to rip the cameras out entirely.

Our Take

Credit to WSOC-TV9 for putting cameras on the people pushing back against the cameras. Monroe joins a growing list of towns where residents aren't waiting for a data breach or a wrongful stop to get organized — they're showing up to council meetings and saying, plainly, that they never consented to having their daily movements logged by a private company's hardware bolted to public infrastructure.

This is exactly how local accountability is supposed to work, and it's a pattern worth watching: once one North Carolina city's contract and data-sharing practices get scrutinized, neighboring jurisdictions start asking the same questions. Flock's pitch is always about solving crime, but the protestors' demand — remove all the cameras — cuts to the real issue, which is that a blanket surveillance dragnet doesn't need your consent, your probable cause, or even a warrant to track where you go.

If you want to see whether Monroe or your own city is wired up, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back the way these residents are, our take-action page has the tools to get started.
