License Plate Reader Saves Lives: Tragic Accident Solved #shorts

Auditing Reno 911 · 7 days ago

The short version: A hit-and-run solved by Flock cameras makes for a compelling clip, but one solved case isn't a blank check for blanketing every street with ALPRs.

Our Take

Credit to Auditing Reno 911 for surfacing this clip — a fatal hit-and-run getting solved is genuinely good news, and nobody at DeFlock is going to pretend otherwise. Cases like this are exactly what Flock Safety and local police departments lead with whenever they pitch a new camera contract to a city council, and it's an easy sell: a tragedy, a resolution, a tidy narrative.

But "this camera caught a bad guy once" is doing a lot of work in that pitch. It skips over the thousands of plates scanned and stored for every one that turns out to matter in a case like this, and it skips over who else gets access to that data, how long it's kept, and whether it's shared across state lines or with federal agencies with zero local oversight. A single solved hit-and-run doesn't tell us anything about the other 99.9% of scans sitting in a database that was never voted on by the public footing the bill.

If your town is debating a Flock contract, or you're just curious how many of these cameras are already watching your commute, check our camera map and see what's actually out there before the next budget meeting turns into a rubber stamp.
