The Apps Watching You - A 2-Minute Phone Privacy Check | Jim | Rewired #Shorts
The short version: Jim's Rewired short is a solid reminder that the surveillance in your pocket deserves the same scrutiny as the ALPR on the pole.
Our Take
Jim's two-minute phone privacy check, posted on his Rewired channel, makes a point we hammer on constantly: the cameras bolted to utility poles aren't the only thing building a profile of your life. The apps on your phone are doing it quietly, continuously, and usually with permissions you never meant to grant. A flashlight app asking for your location isn't an accident — it's a business model.
We'd push the logic further than a phone settings walkthrough can. Your location history, once scooped up by an app, can end up in a data broker's hands and from there into the same ecosystem that license plate reader networks feed — law enforcement contracts, 'public safety' dashboards, and third-party resellers who answer to nobody. Tightening app permissions is good hygiene, but it doesn't undo the fact that Flock and similar ALPR systems are photographing your plate, your car, and sometimes you, every time you drive past one of their cameras — no app toggle fixes that.
Credit to Jim for making digital self-defense approachable in under two minutes. If you want to see how that same surveillance logic plays out on your own streets, check our camera map to find ALPRs near you, and visit take action for ways to push back on both the phone in your pocket and the camera on the pole.
