Lakewood Police Drones As First Responders FAQ

Lakewood Colorado · 1 year ago

The short version: Lakewood PD's promotional FAQ video sells Drone as First Responder as routine crime-fighting, but glosses over the surveillance infrastructure it quietly builds.

Our Take

Lakewood Colorado's police department put out a friendly explainer video pitching its Drone as First Responder (DFR) program, and credit where it's due: they're at least trying to answer public questions instead of just rolling the cameras out quietly. But an FAQ produced by the department itself is not a substitute for independent oversight, and the format conveniently sidesteps the harder questions about retention, data sharing, and mission creep that tend to define these programs once the novelty wears off.

DFR is being marketed nationwide as a faster, cheaper alternative to sending officers in cars, but what's really happening is the normalization of routine aerial surveillance over entire neighborhoods, launched from police-controlled 'drone docks' that can be airborne in under a minute for calls that may have nothing to do with an active emergency. Once a department has that capability and the footage archive that comes with it, the incentive to expand its use, quietly integrate it with license plate reader networks, or share data with other agencies rarely goes away. Promotional videos rarely mention retention windows, audit logs, or who outside the department can request access to the footage.

If Lakewood residents want the real picture, they should be asking their city council for the actual policy documents, not relying on a department-produced highlight reel. It's also worth checking whether Flock Safety ALPR cameras are already active nearby using our camera map, and if you want to push back on unchecked surveillance expansion in your own city, our take-action page has concrete next steps.
