Flock Cameras Helped Find a Missing Teen—Is Surveillance Worth It? #Shorts

DeadHourHQ · 2 months ago

The short version: DeadHourHQ's short highlights a Boulder case where Flock ALPRs reportedly helped locate a missing teen, but a single success story doesn't settle the surveillance debate.

Our Take

Credit to DeadHourHQ for putting a real case in front of viewers instead of just abstract debate. A missing-teen recovery is exactly the scenario Flock Safety leans on hardest in its marketing, and when it works, nobody wants to be the person arguing against it. That's precisely why these stories get amplified — they're emotionally airtight and hard to argue with in a 60-second clip.

But one recovered kid doesn't tell you what happens to the other 99.9% of scans that have nothing to do with an Amber Alert — the daily location tracking of ordinary drivers, the data retention policies, who else gets query access, and how easily this infrastructure can be repurposed for immigration sweeps, abortion-related investigations, or just plain fishing expeditions. Boulder's win is real, but it's being used as a permission slip for a nationwide camera network that most residents never voted on and can't opt out of.

If you want to know whether cameras like these are already logging your plate, check our map before you decide the tradeoff is worth it — and if it isn't, our take-action guide has steps for pushing back at the city council level.
