Overseas version license plate recognition cameras are under commissioning#LPRCamera#ExportLPRCamera

The short version: A manufacturer's clip of ALPR cameras being 'commissioned' for export is a reminder that plate-reading surveillance is now a mass-produced global commodity, not a rare tool.

Our Take

This video from JWSY Barrier Gate isn't a bombshell exposé — it's basically a product demo, showing an "overseas version" of their license plate recognition camera getting set up for shipment. But that mundanity is exactly the point. Companies all over the world are churning out ALPR hardware like it's parking-lot equipment, and in a lot of ways, that's how it gets marketed and sold: a commodity gate-and-barrier accessory rather than what it actually is, a tool that can log where every car and driver goes, stored indefinitely, searchable by anyone with access.

What a video like this doesn't show is where these cameras end up — which municipalities, which private developments, which countries with far fewer privacy protections than even the thin ones we have here. The global export market for plate readers means the same surveillance architecture that Flock Safety has normalized in American neighborhoods is being packaged and sold wholesale, with little public debate about who's watching the watchers.

We cover this stuff because most people have no idea how many of these cameras are already clocking their daily commute. Check our map to see what's been documented near you, and if you want to push back on unchecked plate surveillance in your own community, our take-action page has concrete steps.
