Flock Cameras Are they good?

ZeppelinLZ99 · 1 month ago

The short version: YouTuber ZeppelinLZ99 asks the simple question we ask every day: are Flock's license-plate cameras actually good for communities, or just good for surveillance?

Our Take

Credit to ZeppelinLZ99 for boiling the Flock Safety debate down to the question that matters most: are these cameras actually good? It's a deceptively simple framing, because the honest answer depends entirely on who's asking and who's watching. Good for clearing a stolen car report in an afternoon? Sure, sometimes. Good for a society that now has a permanent, searchable record of where your car goes, who it visits, and when? That's a very different calculus, and it's the one most city council votes skip past.

What gets lost in the 'good or bad' debate is scale. One camera on one road is a tool. Thousands of networked cameras feeding a shared database that other agencies, and in some cases federal ICE and immigration enforcement, can query is infrastructure — and infrastructure doesn't ask for consent, it just gets installed. Videos like this one are useful precisely because they open that conversation up to people who've never heard of Flock before and assume it's just another traffic camera.
