Protect Your Privacy with RayHunter #shorts

STS Technologies LLC · 2 months ago

The short version: STS Technologies LLC spotlights EFF's open-source RayHunter tool for detecting IMSI catchers, a reminder that cellular surveillance and ALPR networks are two sides of the same dragnet.

Our Take

Credit to STS Technologies LLC for putting a spotlight on RayHunter, the EFF's open-source cell-site simulator detector. IMSI catchers — those fake cell towers that trick your phone into connecting so someone can log your location or intercept traffic — are a cousin surveillance tool to the license plate readers we track every day. Different sensor, same playbook: quietly harvest data on ordinary people moving through public space, often without a warrant or public disclosure.

We'd note that this particular video is also a storefront pitch — a hardware reseller selling a ready-made RayHunter device built on the EFF's free, open-source project. That's not inherently a problem, and DIY privacy tools deserve attention, but it's worth remembering you can build or flash this yourself for less than a pre-packaged unit costs, and the EFF's code is the real contribution here, not the retail markup.

Detecting a rogue tower is reactive defense. The bigger fight is pushing back on the infrastructure before it's normalized — whether that's a stingray parked near a protest or a Flock Safety camera logging every car on your street. Check our camera map to see what's already watching your neighborhood, and hit take action if you want to push your local council to limit this stuff before it becomes permanent.
