Local news loves a good "crime-fighting technology" story, and this WBRC Fox 6 segment fits the mold: cameras go up, police say they help solve cases, everybody smiles for the camera (pun intended). What's missing, as usual, is any mention of who else can query these networks, how long the data sits in a database, or what happens when a system built to catch car thieves gets used to track someone's daily commute, medical visits, or church attendance.
Alabama is a good example of how fast this rolls out once one department signs on — neighboring cities and counties see the pitch and follow, often with little public debate about retention windows, audit logs, or ICE and out-of-state data sharing. "Growing increasingly popular" is doing a lot of work in that headline; popular with police budgets and Flock's sales team doesn't mean the public actually got a vote.
