Flock camera destroyed in Houston

Chron · 2 weeks ago

The short version: Chron's Houston report on a destroyed Flock camera near I-10 and Yale shows public frustration with ALPR surveillance is boiling over into direct action.

Our Take

Chron's on-the-ground report out of Houston captures something we've seen bubbling up in city after city: someone got fed up enough with a Flock Safety camera watching I-10 and Yale that they took matters into their own hands. Credit to the Chron team for covering this as local news rather than ignoring it — these cameras are popping up on corners across Texas with little public debate, and residents are noticing.

We're not in the business of cheering vandalism, but we understand the impulse. Flock's pitch is always the same — "find the bad guy" — while the reality is a growing database that logs the movements of everyone who drives past, cop or not, warrant or not. When a company can blanket a neighborhood with license plate readers faster than residents can even learn the cameras exist, let alone opt out, frustration finds its own outlets.

If you want a legal, lasting way to push back, start by checking our camera map to see what's watching your own streets, then head to our take-action page for ways to organize your city council instead of your local hardware store.
