Privacy vs Safety Our Silent Trade Off Explained

Shasta Unfiltered · 6 months ago

The short version: Shasta Unfiltered frames ALPR surveillance as a quiet trade-off, but we'd argue most Americans never actually agreed to the deal.

Our Take

Credit to Shasta Unfiltered for naming the thing most local news segments dance around: this isn't really a debate, it's a trade-off, and it's happening without most residents ever casting a vote on it. A city council approves a Flock Safety contract in a routine meeting, a press release touts "public safety," and suddenly every car entering town is logged, timestamped, and stored in a database that outlives whatever crime it was supposedly meant to solve.

The "privacy vs safety" framing is useful, but it also lets agencies off the hook. The real question isn't whether cameras can help solve a crime here or there — of course they sometimes can. It's whether a permanent, searchable record of everyone's movements, shared across jurisdictions and sometimes with federal agencies, is a price any community actually agreed to pay. That's not a trade-off decided at the ballot box; it's one decided in vendor demos and council consent agendas.

We built our map specifically so people don't have to take anyone's word for how much of this infrastructure already surrounds them. Check the map to see what's logging your plate, and if you want to push back locally, our take-action page has the tools to start that fight at the source — your own city council.
