Smart Gate Access: Intercom & License Plate Recognition ππ¨
The short version: A UniFi integrator's demo of gate-mounted license plate recognition shows how casually ALPR tech is now sold as a convenience upgrade, not a surveillance decision.
Our Take
Credit to YesTechie for a slick install walkthrough β this is a straightforward product demo, not a surveillance story on its surface. But that's exactly why it matters. Smart gate kits like this are how license plate readers quietly spread from police budgets into HOAs, apartment complexes, schools, and office parks. Nobody votes on it, nobody reads a privacy policy, and nobody audits who has access to the plate log six months later.
The pitch is always convenience: parents get in faster, visitors use a PIN, the gate just knows your car. What gets left out is that every plate read is a timestamped record of who came and went, often stored on a vendor's cloud with murky retention rules and zero oversight from the people being scanned. Multiply that across thousands of these 'smart gate' installs nationwide and you've got a parallel surveillance network built one HOA budget line at a time, with far less accountability than even the Flock-style systems police departments use.
If you want to see how dense this is already getting in your area, check our camera map, and if you're ready to push back on unchecked plate tracking near you, our take-action guide is a good place to start.
